Monokini
You might have never heard the term, but you maybe have seen one here or there, especially if you are a fan of swim suit issues or calendars. Monokinis are inspired by the bikini, but in contrast to the two piece bikini, a monokini is a one-piece bathing suits. The original Monokini was designed by Rudi Gernreich in 1964. As its designer the Austrian also invented the name Monokini and introduced it into the American English vocabulary. His thought was to replace the word “Bi”, meaning two, in bikini with the word “mono” meaning one. But the name of bikini was not derived this way, it was rather named after the Bikini Atoll in the 1940s. This first monokini swimsuit looked like a one-piece bathing suits that was cut off just below the breast with the intention to leave the breasts bare. The first monokini was a black Monokini made from knit fabric with two thin shoulder straps. It reached from just below the breasts all the way down to the groin area.
Another style of bathing suit, a suspender bathing suit is often also called monokini bathing suit.
Monokini swimwear was the breakthrough for female freedom in the sexual revolution. Monokini swimsuits are more provocative and started being used as a medium to sexual freedom in the 1960s. Now, almost 50 years later Monokini bathing suits are the ultimate in hot and sexy swimwear and often designed with details such as chains, strings and other items. Designer Monokini swimwear such as Calvin Klein monokinis and candie's monokinis are slightly more decent by covering the breasts again.
Designer monokinis are not cheap and you can buy monokinis like the ones from Calvin Klein in high end department stores or online. Monokini pictures are mostly seen in swimsuit issues, swimsuit calendars and some designer catalogues. Cheap monokinis are usually not easy to come by since they are not very high in demand and are also a rare sight at any pools or at the beach. Checking out pages online and specialized stores frequently can help finding a cheap monokini for you to wear.
Monokinis might be one of the only swimwear pieces that have not made its round in the toddler and under 5 age group yet. While other styles like the thong swimsuit are available for young children, I am sure it will not take long before these swimsuits are also available for the youngest ones under us.
