Boardshorts

One style of men’s swimwear is called boardshorts. Boardshorts are a style of swimwear worn by male and more recently also female swimmers and are usually worn in context with certain aquatic sports related to boards. Surfing and wakeboarding being two of the sports where boardshorts for men and women are generally worn, but men’s board shorts have also gotten more popular outside of these sports. Mens boardshorts are sometimes also called “boardies”. The name for mens board shorts originates from their wear in sports connected with the board.

Some of the better-known manufacturers are men’s North Face board shorts, Billabong, Quicksilver, Speedo and Katin board shorts.

Men’s and Women’s board shorts are designed with the sport in mind. Falling into cool water and then standing with wet pants in the wind is not very healthy for the human body. Therefore boardshorts are made out of soft polyester or nylon that quickly dries after getting in contact with or getting submerged in water. Boardshorts are very durable, comfortable and lightweight. Generally boardshorts are longer than any of the other marketed male swimwear. Boardshorts reach up to the knee or even slightly below the knee, while regular swim trunks stop short of the knee. Most boardshorts also have a baggy look to them. A good amount of boardshorts come with a Hawaiian or flowery look to them since they are used by surfers that are mostly having there surfing resorts in such exotic places as Hawaii.

Skateboarders and the skater look that came out in the recent years in North America also adopted Boardshorts. These kind of shorts are less popular in Europe and Asia, where generally other styles of swimwear are preferred by men. Newer improvements of boardshorts are neoprene flys versus the former Velcro flys, which caused trouble for the men since swimwear in general does not get worn with underwear. Lots of the more expensive boardshorts are welded or glued and have a seamless design for the comfort of the wearer. Some boardshorts have built in underwear style pants or nets for s more comforting feel.

Boardshorts can be found at many department stores, but mostly at sports and aqua sports related stores such as surf shops. Boardshorts are usually slightly more expensive than normal swim trunks, not only for the added material but also the reason that some are designed for the board sports exclusively and a smaller crowd buys them. Should you be looking for a cheaper board short, it might be recommended to wait for a clearance sale or sales at the end of summer.
